Definition

Selection is the process of making the choice of the most appropriate person from the pool of applicants recruited to fill the relevant job vacancy. 

There are five main steps in the selection process. First, criteria are developed to determine how the person will be chosen. Second is a review of the applications and résumés, often done via a computer program that can find keywords. Next is interviewing the employee. The last steps involve testing, such as a personality test or drug test, and then finally, making the offer to the right candidate" (Bryant,2010) 


Importance of selections.  

  • To get the right person for the job Vacancy.
  • Must select the right person who will contribute to maximize productivity and efficiency of the organization.
  • To establish or maintain an image as a good employer.
  • To gain reputation as a good corporate citizen and a good employer with transparency in work.
  • To perform the selection process as cost-effective as possible.
  • To get the value for the cost you incur in recruiting a person.

Application Evaluation

•Assessing the job applicant’s suitability for the job vacancy using the information given in the application form sent by him/her and Advantages and Disadvantages of selecting employees based on Application evaluation as the method of Selection.

Employment Test

An examination specially held to assess the degree of the suitability of the job applicant to the job vacancy.

Advantages and Disadvantages of selecting employees based on Employment Test as the method of Selection.

A face-to-face, oral and observational evaluation method of appraising an applicant’s acceptability with regard to a certain job.

Types of Interviews

 

Individual Interview

Consists of one interviewer and one interviewee

 

Panel Interview

Panel interviews consists of more than one interviewer

 

2) Based on the nature of questions asked

1. Structured Interview ( Includes a pre-determined set of questions)

2. Unstructured Interview (Different questions are asked from the applicants)

3. Mixed Interview (Combination of both)

4. Problem-solving Interview (This contains a set of problems (mini cases) and critical incidents that the applicant may have to face on the job)

5. Stress Interview (This contains questions that are asked intentionally to annoy, to embrace, or to frustrate the applicant with the purpose of examining the ability to face such challenges)


Background Investigation.

Special investigation is a special investigation to reveal real background of the job applicant.

It is a formal look in to past behavior of the applicant

  • Academic background
  • Employment background
  • Personal/Individual background
  • Financial background

 

Medical Examination

•Special test focusing on the physical fitness of the job applicant. It examines the job applicant’s heath and health and physical abilities.


Assessment Centers

•A relatively new method of selection which is mainly used for managerial selection.

•An assessment center is a Programmed which lasts from one to three days and uses a range of assessment techniques to determine whether or not candidates are suitable for a particular job

Assessment center has following features;

  • Focuses on behavior of job applicants
  • Multiple types of evaluation techniques
  • Multiple assessors/evaluators
  • Multiple job candidates
  • Feedback is given to all job candidates.

  1. Proper selection of employees for an organization is very important since it affect the organisational performance directly. Selected employees should deployed in suitable positions in order to obtain maximum output. All the best.
